Do Re Mi ("Do, a deer, a female deer...")

Lyrics

The video shows only the latter half of this super-fun, energetic song--it's long been a favorite of mine, especially when I started learning to play the piano when I was ten.

Not only does this song show Maria getting along better with the kids, but it's also become a great way for real-life music teachers to teach solfege (placing the various pitches in a scale, very handy for sight-singing and learning to read music). For every scale, you label the low beginning note (the keynote) as "Do" and go up the scale from there.

For instance, in this song, which is in B-flat major, B-flat is "Do", the starting point/keynote of the B-flat major scale. The rest of the scale goes as follows:

  • Do - B-flat
  • Re - C
  • Mi - D
  • Fa - E-flat
  • So - F
  • La - G
  • Ti - A
  • Do - B-flat
